What You Should Know

Here are some expert tips and advice regarding your home.

Do you know if your electrical appliances are being shocked to death?

The lifespan of your refrigeration, water heater and new home theater may be at risk. You may not realize it, but there's a good chance the electrical appliances in your home are being slowly "shocked to death" by invisible electrical surges pulsating through your power line. It could be happening as you sit at your computer reading this.

Every electrical home appliance is at risk. Your TV. Stereo. Computer. Home theater. DVD player. Toaster oven. Air conditioner. Furnace. Stove. Refrigerator. Freezer. Clothes washer. Anything that’s "plugged in" inside your home.

Every day appliances are zapped by an average of 20 power surges. These surges are power fluctuations that go unnoticed except by your appliances. The end result can shorten appliance lifespan by as much as 30%. That’s like paying full price for an appliance, then getting to use 2/3 of what you paid for.

In a worst case scenario, a lighting strike as far as a mile away can send 300,000 amps of electricity surging through your home’s wiring. All it takes is one bolt of lightning to fry a house full of electronics in seconds – instant burnout! Even without a major electrical storm, there are plenty of other causes of power surge damage.

Uniquely powerful insurance you can't afford to be without.

It's a scary moment when in the middle of an ice or thunder storm, your lights start to flicker... then suddenly go out. Pitch black. No lights anywhere. No hum of the refrigerator. No whoosh of warm or cool air circulating through the ductwork. No red-glowing reminder of the correct time.

It's as though someone unplugged your entire house. Yet, your power is definitely out. And most likely it's the same story for all your neighbors.

What can you do about it? Usually, there’s not much you can do except sit in the dark and wait for the power company to restore power (which can take days)... Unless you have an ABC Electric Back-Up Generator.

Next time there's a power outage, your house could be the one bright spot on the block.

ABC Electric specializes in automatic and manual back-up generators, as well as generator transfer systems that keep your lights ablaze... your appliances humming... and your family comfy.

Think of it as affordable "power insurance". Then call 512.310.0062 for an appointment or schedule an appointment now!

Spellbinding discovery taps hidden serpentine power

Running new electrical wiring and communications cable in an existing home is a challenge. It’s so challenging that for most electricians and cable guys, it’s impossible.

It’s obvious these guys do not have ABC Electric training. If they were, they’d know how to run cable and wiring inside your walls without leaving tell-tale scratches or holes to be patched.

ABC Electric electricians are polished pros when it comes to "snaking" cables and wires through existing walls.

Most electricians are clueless about this high-skill, spellbinding technique because 99.9% of their work is done inside new home construction – before walls every go up.

Have one of them run a new circuit in your home and he’ll most likely staple it along your baseboard... or punch a hole in your wall. The first is ugly and unprofessional, the second means you now have to repaint or repaper over patched wallboard.

So, if you’re thinking of adding a circuit, moving an outlet, or rewiring – an you prefer invisible wiring – call ABC Electric.

Are you a DIY hostage in your own home?

Now’s the time to declare your freedom from those half-done handyman projects that have been holding you hostage.

Call ABC Electric. We want to be your power-ful hero!

Shocking truth revealed

Did you know that according to the U.S. government, electrical problems are responsible for more than 67,759 home fires each year? Did you also know electrical wiring causes twice as many home fires as electrical appliances? With this in mind, it’s time you knew the chocking truth about aluminum vs. copper wiring.

  1. Aluminum doesn’t conduct electricity as well as copper wiring.

  2. Aluminum is more brittle than copper wiring.

  3. Aluminum is more likely to corrode than copper wiring.

  4. Aluminum expands and contracts more than copper wiring running a much higher risk of overheating... the primary cause of electrical fires.

  5. So, why have hundreds of thousands of homes been built using aluminum wiring? And why do 99.9% of most electrical contractors still choose to use aluminum wiring, not copper? Aluminum is cheaper. Yes, copper is safer, but aluminum costs less. That’s why the first (and possibly most inflammatory) question you should ask any electrician before he does work in your home is this: "Do you use copper or aluminum wiring?"

What’s a tell-tale sign you’ve got a "world class" electrical troubleshooter in your home?

If you can’t answer this question, you’ve never had an ABC Electric Service Electrician at your house figuring out why your lights keep flickering... or what’s wrong with that outlet that has never worked.

Not only are our Service Electricians "world class" professionals when it comes to solving even the most mysterious electrical challenges... they’re as neat and clean-cut as they come.

And it starts with their "signature" starched white shirts.

When you call ABC Electric, the Service Electrician who shows up at your doorstep will be freshly shaven, wearing a precision-creased pair of grey pants topped with a freshly starched white shirt.

It’s part of ABC Electric’s, "Starched White Shirt Standard". If you don’t meet the standard, you don’t work for ABC Electric. Compare our Service Technicians with any other electrician you’ve ever used:

  1. Ours wear "shoobies" over their polished black shoes so they don’t track dirt and dried leaves into your home.

  2. Ours don’t smoke in your house or anywhere else on your property... no ‘butts’ about it.

  3. Ours won’t park in your driveway or anywhere on your proerty without first asking your permission. A man’s and woman’s home is his/her castle and we treat it that way.

  4. Ours clean up after themselves leaving your home as clean – or cleaner – than they found it.

  5. All our electricians must pass a comprehensive background check and drug test, as well as extensive electrical troubleshooting training. Three out of four who apply never qualify.

  6. Why settle for less?

What to do when your lights go out

ABC Electric and the American Red Cross share these tips for what to do – and what not to do – in case of a power outage.

Safety comes first:
  1. Only use a flashlight for emergency lighting. Never use candles!

  2. Keep fresh batteries in a battery-operated radio.

  3. Turn off any electrical equipment you were using when the power went out.

  4. Avoid opening your refrigerator and freezer.

  5. Listen to local radio for updated information.

  6. Leave one light turned on so you’ll know when power is restored.

  7. Do not run a generator inside your home or garage.

  8. If you use a generator, connect the equipment you want to power directly to the outlets on the generator. Don’t connect a generator to your home electrical system.

  9. Think Ahead & Have on Hand
    1. Flashlight(s). Due to risk of fire, don’t use candles during a power outage.

    2. Portable radio.

    3. Batteries for flashlights and radio.

    4. At least one gallon of water.

    5. A small supply of food that doesn’t require refrigeration.

    6. Using a generator: If you don’t already own a generator and are considering buying one, get advice from a certified electrical professional. Make sure the generator is listed with Underwriter’s Laboratories or a similar organization. Some municipalities, Air Quality Districts, or states have ‘air quality permit’ requirements.

A certified electrician can provide more information. Always keep an operating generator outdoors – never operate inside, including in your basement or garage.

Don’t Wait for Your Lights to Go Out... Call ABC Electric Now! ABC Electric specializes in installing automatic and manual back-up generators, as well as generator transfer systems to keep your lights and your appliances running... and your family comfortably warm or cool, depending on the season.

Who’s hogging your power?

Since you moved into your home, how many new demands have you put on the electrical supply coming into your house?

Have you added a hot tub (a major ‘power hog’)... more electrical outlets... or a second refrigerator?

Have you installed a larger air conditioner?

Or have you finished your basement, enlarged a room, or built on a whole new addition?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these, your pwer panel may be in need of a major facelift.

The power panel (also known as the circuit breaker box or electrical panel) is the backbone of your home’s power supply. As you add electrical appliances and circuits, you increase the demand on this supply.

Depending on when you home was built and how much electricity you use, your power panel may need to be replaces or sub-panel added to keep up with demand.

Don’t wait for the sizzling sound of scorched and overloaded wiring to alert you. Find out if your power panel needs a facelift. Call an ABC Electric Power Panel Expert now. There’s no obligation.

How to choose the right electrician if you have any of these problems and want it fixed?

Electricians rarely get emergency calls. If you’ve got sparks coming from an outlet or a fire in your attic, you don’t call ABC Electric. You call 911. And you should.

So, when we do get calls from homeowners, it normally isn’t to deal with a life-or-death emergency situation. Instead, it’s more likely you’re suffering from one of these six annoying problems:

  1. "My neighbor (or hubby) tried doing it for me." My apologies to the fellows reading this but … a HUGE piece of our business has to do with finishing the projects you start. From outlets to ceiling fans… chandeliers to hot tubs. We really don't mind, although it would be easier (and most likely cheaper) if you'd call us first. We have the tools, experience, and know-how.

  2. "I need a ceiling fan or chandelier installed." We install lighting fixtures inside and out, fans of all types, outlets in any room of your home, dimmer switches and more. We guarantee our work meets all city codes. Plus, we use only copper wiring.

  3. "The breaker won’t stay reset." If your breaker keeps tripping, you have a potentially dangerous problem involving your home's circuitry. Were experienced at finding the source of your problem and solving it.

  4. Ugly internet or TV cable staples to your baseboards. (instead of hidden inside the wall) Let's face it… "snaking" wire through walls is an art, a science, and a very special skill few electricians, cable guys or Internet technicians have. But you're in luck when you call ABC Electric. We're specialists at running hidden circuitry.

  5. Something smells scorched… and it's not breakfast. Over-heated appliances and electrical circuits are a problem you don't want to ignore. A call to us now may save you a 911 call later.

  6. The unsolved mystery switch. This is our favorite call of all. If you have a switch you've never been able to link to an outlet or circuit, call us to solve the mystery.

Answer to unsolved mystery just a phone call away

Are you haunted by a “mystery switch” located in your bedroom, bath, garage, or kitchen?

Has the puzzling story behind this switch mystified you since you moved in?

Have you or others in your family spent hours, days, weeks, months, maybe even years trying to locate the outlet, circuit, or light fixture that this switch turns on and off?

It’s time you call the Detective – The Sherlock Holmes of All-Things-Electrical.

As part of our ABC Electric training, all our Electrical Service Electricians are taught the highly classified procedures for tracking down even the most secretive switch. Maybe that’s why we have a 99.999% perfect record when it comes to solving the mystery behind even the most illusive of switches.

While we’re doing our detective work, why not have us install that new ceiling fan that’s never been out of its box… or install GFI (ground fault indicator) outlets in your bathrooms and kitchen for safety and code compliance. No job is too small, too challenging, or too mysterious for ABC Electric.
